Amelanchier canadensis, commonly called shadblow serviceberry, is a deciduous, early flowering, large shrub or small tree which can grow up to 25-30 feet tall. It boasts showy, slightly fragrant, crisp white flowers in drooping clusters which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring contrasted against finely toothed, medium to dark green leaves that change to a stunning orange red in autumn. The flowers give way to small, round, green berries which turn red and finally mature to a dark purplish-black in early summer. The edible berries resemble blueberries in size and color and are often used in jams, jellies and pies! You won't be the only one who loves the little berries, your feathered friends will flock to this tree as well. It is easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade and looks great in woodland and native gardens especially contrasted against dark or shady backgrounds which highlights its form, flowers, and fall color. Wherever you choose to plant it will delight you with seasons of interest.
